Slips happen.
Quitting tobacco is hard, and you may often feel a strong urge to return to tobacco, telling yourself that “just one cigarette/dip/chew is no big deal.” This is a BIG MISTAKE! It’s easy for one instance to lead to two or three, and before you know it, you’re back to using tobacco as much as (or more than) you did before.
But if you do have one weak moment, what then? The answer is to get right back on track – don’t let one slip become a full-blown relapse. Here are some tips that can help:
- Call a quit specialist at OhioQuits – 800-QUIT-NOW – immediately! Quit specialists are specially trained to help if you slip up. They’ll help you get back on the track to quitting for good.
- Get rid of your cigarettes or tobacco products.
- Think of the incident as a “slip,” rather than a “relapse.”
- Don’t feel bad or give up.
- Leave the situation to eliminate the “triggers” that caused the slip. Review your triggers.
- Call your “quitting buddy” or another friend who can help.
- Review your reasons for quitting.
- Commit to quitting again right away.
- Learn from your slip. Next time, you’ll be better prepared.
