Helping Someone Decide To Quit
If you know a person who uses tobacco, and you want to help them decide to quit, it helps to know that encouragement from a variety of different people – family, friends, healthcare professionals – can make them more likely to quit successfully.

Your comments can be one more event that encourages them to move toward quitting.

Here are some tips for encouraging someone to make a quit attempt:
  • Be diplomatic, rather than confrontational or demanding. Even if you have discussed quitting before, begin any new discussion gently.
  • Let the person know why you want them to quit. Provide reasons that are as important to them as they are to you. Click Here for important reasons to quit.
  • One good way to begin a discussion is to mention a new option that you’ve heard about – such as OhioQuits at 800-QUIT-NOW.
  • Make it a short conversation – less then 5 minutes.
  • Ask if there’s a way you can help.
  • Repeat your attempt every 6 to 12 months.
